Male American Goldfinch by Wessonnative Male American Goldfinch by Wessonnative
As a general rule, these little birds spend the winter in my area, but their plumage is so drab that they don't attract much attention. However, as soon as spring approaches, the males get rid of all that drab plumage and become a bright, golden yellow for the breeding season. By that time, they are usually long gone and headed north to mate and reproduce. This year, for whatever reason, they are hanging around. There were no less than a dozen of these brightly colored birds in my yard today, and I couldn't resist shooting a few images of them. Enjoy...

Thanks! I wish they would stay here all summer, but, unfortunately, they don't. For some reason, they stayed in my area longer than usual this spring. By the end of March, they are usually long gone, and we never see them in their breeding plumage. I guess they decided to give us a treat this year.

Thanks, John. These little guys are normally long gone from my area before they get this brilliant. I was fortunate to see so many of them this year.

Lucky that you got to catch the color this year. Lots of my migratory birds seem a bit off schedule here too... My cedar waxwings never really arrived this year.

Thanks! Now that you mention it, we still have cedar waxwings in great numbers here. I have been wondering if the migration north is slower than normal this year. Maybe they know something we don't.

Thanks, Marianne! Now that migration season is upon us, I hope to shoot and share lots more images. I shot nearly 200 images the day I shot and posted this one and "Unconditional Dedication", but I chose to post only two images. I have plans to go out and shoot birds all weekend, if I don't have to work, and if the weather cooperates. Thanks again!
